Lakritz Accommodation

A Place to Slow Down

Lakritz Accommodation offers a quiet, considered stay within a contemporary art studio, gallery, and botanical garden in Chintsa East, Eastern Cape.

This is not simply a place to sleep. Lakritz is a place to slow down, observe, and reconnect — with art, nature, and time. The accommodation is designed for guests seeking stillness, reflection, and meaningful engagement rather than entertainment or excess.

Guests live alongside the Lakritz Gallery and garden, where contemporary artworks are part of daily life rather than a backdrop. Art is not staged here; it is lived with.

Lakritz attracts visitors who value silence, depth, and attention — writers, researchers, artists, and thoughtful travellers who prefer calm environments and self-directed experiences.

This is not a party destination or a conventional holiday stay. Lakritz is a place of seeing, thinking, and being.

The Garden Room

A Quiet, Light-Filled Retreat

The Garden Room is Lakritz’s private accommodation space, set apart from the main house to ensure privacy and deep quiet. Thoughtfully positioned within the art and botanical garden, it offers uninterrupted views and a sense of retreat.

The room is light-filled, minimal, and calm. A queen-size bed, built-in cupboard, and uncluttered interior allow the surrounding garden and artworks to take centre stage rather than the room itself. The en-suite bathroom includes a spacious walk-in shower, finished with simple, functional details.

Outside, a private sitting area overlooks the garden — an intimate place for morning tea, reading, writing, or quiet observation throughout the day.

House Philosophy

Living With Art

Art at Lakritz is not decoration. It is part of daily life, inviting slow looking, reflection, and conversation without expectation.

The Garden as Teacher

The botanical art garden is a living archive of indigenous and medicinal plants, designed to guide curiosity, learning, and quiet observation.

Quiet as a Shared Value

Silence and natural sounds are part of the experience. Guests are asked to respect the quiet for others and for the garden ecosystem.

Eco-Conscious Presence

Lakritz operates on solar power and rainwater tanks, following low-impact living principles and mindful use of resources.

Space for Retreat & Research

The space supports self-led writing, artistic research, and contemplative retreats that value depth over productivity.

Conversation & Collaboration

Dialogue is part of how Lakritz lives and grows, through art talks, walks, collaborations, and informal exchange.
