Claudine Hauke

Germany · Wild Coast, South Africa

Born in Germany and now based on South Africa's Wild Coast, Claudine Hauke is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist whose work explores the complex relationship between humanity, nature, identity, and the rapidly changing world we inhabit. Working across painting, photography, mixed media, ceramics, video, and installation, her practice is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a deep interest in both personal and collective transformation.

After living and working in Europe, the United States, India, and South Africa, Hauke developed a global perspective that informs her artistic approach. Her work examines themes of environmental change, human interaction, memory, resilience, and renewal. Through layered surfaces, mark-making, collage, stitching, and the interplay between destruction and reconstruction, she creates works that invite reflection and multiple interpretations.

In 2025, Hauke established Lakritz Contemporary Art Gallery in Chintsa East as an independent platform for contemporary art and cultural exchange. What began as a gallery has since evolved into a broader creative ecosystem that includes the Art Garden, Forest of Return, the Lakritz Forum, accommodation, and Lakritz THE MAGAZINE.

Artist Statement

My work explores the visible and invisible forces that shape our lives — our relationship with nature, our connection to one another, and the constant process of change that defines the human experience.

Through abstraction and experimentation, I create layered visual narratives that reflect both vulnerability and resilience, disruption and renewal. Materials are manipulated, removed, stitched, sanded, and rebuilt, becoming metaphors for personal and collective transformation.

Rather than offering fixed answers, I seek to create spaces for contemplation where viewers can bring their own experiences, questions, and interpretations.

Art, for me, is an invitation to look more closely, remain curious, and engage with the complexities of the world around us.
