Matter of Being
In celebration of Women’s Month in South Africa, Lakritz the Magazine invites contemporary women artists from around the world to submit work for a special digital feature titled “Matter of Being”, to be published in August 2025. This curated 3-page spread seeks to highlight female perspectives on identity, presence, and the experience of being — in all its complexity, beauty, tension, and strength. All visual mediums are welcome: painting, drawing, textile, photography, installation, digital, performance (still documentation), sculpture, and more.
We particularly encourage submissions from South African women artists, where underrepresentation in the art world remains a pressing issue. While this phenomenon is global, it is even more pronounced in Africa due to specific historical and cultural factors. This feature aims to amplify women’s voices and visibility within and beyond our borders.
Submission Guidelines
- Eligibility: Open to all women-identifying artists worldwide
What to send: - Up to 5 high-quality images of your artwork (JPEG, 300dpi)
- A short artist statement (max 200 words)
- A brief bio (max 200 words)
- Subject line: Submission – Matter of Being
Selected artists will be featured in Lakritz the Magazine, distributed digitally across South Africa and internationally, with the aim of celebrating and uplifting women’s voices in art.
